Directed Field Studies (DFS) is the name given to the 4th or “applied” year of the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Justice Studies at Lethbridge College. It involves an academic component and a real-world experience (DFS environment) where the theory and knowledge learned through academic study is applied.
Participation in a DFS environment is required for many but not all of the courses taken as part of the academic component. Depending on a student’s plan, as little as four and up to eight months or more may be spent in the DFS environment.
A DFS environment may be a paid workplace, if the student’s work is Justice and Human Services related and satisfies other various criteria. Otherwise, students may opt to complete their placement in a voluntary position.
You’ll discover that this program is highly individualized. It was designed to enhance your analytical abilities and cognitive skills as you become increasingly reflective and much more aware of your aspirations as well as the criteria for and benefits of an effective and well-chosen DFS environment.
